Season 2 of the Penn National Gaming Hollywood Poker Open series will feature one of the most recognizable faces in poker at the 10-year anniversary since his big win - 2003 World Series of Poker Champion Chris Moneymaker.
Chris Moneymaker turned the poker world upside down in 2003 while living and working in finance in Knoxville, Tennessee when he became the first amateur player to qualify via $39 PokerStars online satellite and end up winning the World Series of Poker Championship in Las Vegas, taking home $2.5 million. Moneymaker beat out more than 800 players, including some of the best in the world, to become the world champ. After a short stint back at his day job, he soon came in 2nd at the World Poker Tour Shooting Star event, and in 2004, shifted gears to focus on poker full time, traveling worldwide for tournament events and appearances. Since his win in 2003, Moneymaker has racked up nearly $1 million in winnings.
The story of Chris Moneymaker was undoubtedly a catalyst in the poker revolution, and sparked a tidal wave of interest that quickly became referred to as the "Moneymaker Effect." Moneymaker spends most of his time at his home base in Collierville, Tennessee with his wife and three daughters being a family man during the day, and studying poker at night.
Moneymaker will serve as the ambassador for the HPO brand and compete in various regional and local qualifying tournaments starting in November 2013, at properties including Hollywood Casinos in Lawrenceburg, Ind.; St. Louis, Mo.; Charles Town, W. Va.; Columbus, Ohio; and culminating with the Championship Event at the M Resort Spa & Casino in Las Vegas in June 2014.
